Jesus asked a disturbing question in Luke 18:8, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” I thought of this question this morning while listening to the CBC radio. Today’s top story sounded like a line from the bible “super weeds choke farmer’s crops”. Jesus’ story about the ‘weeds and the wheat’ (Matthew 13:24-30) is a story about the coming of the Son of Man. Jesus’ second coming is compared to the harvest. Until the time of the harvest the weeds and the wheat will grow together. Jesus explained, the weeds are the sons of the evil one and the wheat are those belonging to God (Matthew 13:36-43). In the daily news it sounds like the weeds win, ‘the weeds are choking the good seeds’.
“When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” These words conclude a teaching on prayer (Luke 18:1-8). The challenge is to pray and not to give up. Faith is what God is looking for. Faith is the “assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1 ASV). In faith let us pray and not give up – remembering that in God’s economy weeds can become wheat. To this end we pray.
