The Auxiliary Captain route to commissioning is one expression of flexible training offered by The College for Officer Training. An Auxiliary Captain is a soldier of The Salvation Army of not less than two years and of at least 48 years of age, who has been called by God to full-time service yet, for valid reasons, is not able to engage in training for officership via the standard residential program at the College for Officer Training. Auxiliary Captaincy is a stepping stone to commissioned officership and thus requires a commitment to tailored training over a five-year period while engaged in full-time ministry. Thus, their training takes place while they are fulfilling their appointment.

Cohort 2 (Commenced Training April 2009)
The training includes several intensive residential components in Winnipeg at CFOT, as well as spiritual formation, field and on site assessments and interviews. Between the residential components, the Aux. Capt. does distance courses and on-site projects, supervised by CFOT and Divisional staff. All requirements for the Certificate of Officership are to be met before commissioning, including an evaluation process engaged in by the Aux. Capt., the Division and CFOT.
Cohort 3 (Commenced Training October 2009)
Auxiliary Captains do not have a sessional name like Cadets, though they will be commissioned with a future Cadet session upon completion of studies and confirmation of officership. The title Cohort is used to describe various groups of Auxiliary Captains who have been begun training at various times.
