Writing from BC, Danette shares, I came across what I think would be a good definition of servanthood in Philippians 2:3-4. It says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.” NLT
When we are truly servants our thoughts and actions are filled with humility and a deep concern for others and their needs. Since being on the Sunshine Coast I have had to be the servant that God wants me to be and sometimes that means putting aside my own plans to assist others in need. Even as recently as this past week I had plans for a particular day but assistance was needed at one of the Thrift Stores. I knew God was telling me to put aside my own plans and to work in the Thrift Store that day. Seeing the gratitude in the staff’s faces as well as the faces of those who came into the store was a wonderful blessing from God.
There are also those who attend the corps and volunteer at Family Services that are truly servants. They humble themselves, put aside their own life issues and come into the building to help others. It could be coming in to help do the weekly deposit, coming to cook a meal for those who are in need, which I had the opportunity to do as well recently, or it could be as simple as playing the piano on Sunday morning. Through these people God is present in their attitudes and their willingness to humble themselves.
