Mike Mailman shares his experience of being “in charge” in his summer appointment. It has been a real eye opener to spend a short time in the field in the driver’s seat this summer. It feels as if I have been called on to constantly put aside my own needs and will to serve others. My wife and I came into this experience expecting to give much more than receive but you can never be truly prepared for what may be expected of you.
We were only able to leave the city we were posted to once in the entire eight weeks of our stay. Every plan for a getaway day was bumped for some reason or another, and we needed to put our own needs aside to serve others.
In the midst of giving up time and energy, we were not ever in want for blessing. Within the city and within the people of the corps, personal blessings flowed seemingly without end. There were deserts, meals, gifts, and evenings out as far as the eye could see. We were only asked to sacrifice what we thought we wanted, and in doing that God was clear to shower on us what He wanted us to receive through our relationships in the corps.
It has been my personal experience that if God asks you to set your own will and needs aside he will always provide. In asking us to sacrifice what we had planned he provided an alternative that not only blessed us but opened a way to bless the giver as well. There was twice the blessing in what God had planned.
