Christ’s Broken Bread
Mon, Jun 25, 2007
My life must be Christ’s broken bread, my love His outpoured wine. These familiar words penned by General Albert Orsborne provide the inspiration for a set of windows showcased at CFOT Winnipeg. The three windows used to be on display at the St. John’s training college, but 2 of them have now moved to Winnipeg, and are displayed in the lobby with the granite crest from the former Winnipeg training college. The third window, featuring Emma Dawson has remained as a showpiece in Newfoundland.
The three windows in Army colours, Yellow, Red and Blue, symbolically represent the fundamental truths of our faith, our historical roots, our mission to be Christ’s broken bread for a dying world, and the triune God who is our resource.
The blue panel utilizes water as a symbol of Christ, the Living Water, whose life was poured out as an offering for all who thirst after righteousness. William Booth, the Founder, had a burning compassion for souls which led ultimately to the birth of The Salvation Army. The broken bread reminds us of Christ, the Bread of Life, who was broken for our salvation. The cross speaks of His atoning work.
The yellow panel (not shown) represents our Eternal God, the Alpha and Omega. Emma Dawson, the young woman from Portugal Cove, started the work of The Salvation Army in Newfoundland, symbolizing the contribution made by our young salvationists, not only in establishing the Army in the province, but also in maintaining its vigour down through the years. The panel features the harvest, and the empty tomb announces the resurrection and the Life, Jesus, who was victorious over death.
The Red panel features a dove, portraying the Holy Spirit, our comforter and guide. Catherine Booth, our founder is also featured in this panel. The winepress serves as a reminder that we, too, are crucified with Christ as we die to self, our love becomes “His Outpoured Wine”. Fire in the panel illuminates our hearts, calling us to be a sanctified people.
The panels greet visitors to the training college, and are a centrepiece of witness to God’s work in the lives of salvationists.
