Song: #459 “Tell Me What To Do To Be Pure”
This song was has been a favorite of mine for a number of years. It reminds me of my own sinfulness and the sinfulness that envelopes our world causing death, destruction and disharmony in homes and yes; even in the church.
Each verse is rich in meaning and challenge. Verse one articulates the cry for purity and escape from sin which comes from a heart that recognizes the need for a deeper cleansing. The words are:
“Tell me what to do to be pure
In the sight of the all-seeing eyes;
Tell me, is there no thorough cure,
No escape from the sin I despise?
Tell me, can I never be free
From this terrible bondage within?
Is there no deliverance for me
From the thraldom of indwelling sin?
The ‘how to’ achieve this life of purity is echoed in the chorus:
“Whiter than the snow! Whiter than the snow!
Wash me in the blood of the Lamb,
And I shall be whiter than the snow”
