We are Family

familyAs an only child, my understanding of family has always been, well, small. With my Mom’s family in Germany and my Dad’s family out West, family always meant just me and my parents.

I am at Weetamah for my practical field placement this year, and one of the ministries that I am involved with is Urban Cafe. Every Friday night, approximately 100-150 people come through our doors for a community meal. To my surprise it wasn’t long before this group of apparent strangers became like a second family to me; and every week I look forward to seeing some of the regulars. Every Friday as I help put the final preparations together I hope Jim will be there with his cribbage board and I wonder if I’ll be able to answer Roger’s weekly trivia question. As the people come in, I scan the room for familiar faces, and I wonder how Linda, and Vincent and Greg have been doing and whether I’ll see them that night.

Some nights are busier than others, and I don’t always get a chance to talk to everyone I know, but over the weeks and months, I have been blessed by hugs, touched by conversations, and humbled by requests for prayer.

And God has shown me that my family is a lot bigger than I once thought.
