Make A Joyful Noise!
Mon, Apr 28, 2008
Under the leadership of Cadet Rebecca Pretty, and the support of the CFOT brass band, over 60 kids and staff from the YMCA daycare enjoyed an afternoon program of singing, music, and dance. It was a natural combination as many of the cadets’ children attend the Y’s daycare program, and we have a great relationship with our neighbours across the street.
Children were introduced to the various instruments in the band. They learned about dynamics in music, standing tall and waving during the loud parts, and curling up small during the soft parts as the band played “Joy in The Salvation Army” (mucho gusto). They learned about keeping the beat while clapping to “Standing on the Promises”, and they accompanied the band with percussion instruments, keeping the beat during “What the Lord Has Done for Me”. Some of the band members joined the group, improvising farm animals as they sang, “Old McDonald”, and also provided the bridge for “London Bridge”. Other features of the afternoon were rousing renditions of “Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious”, “The Can Can”, and “The Ants go Marching”. The afternoon ended with an upbeat march around the room to finish a great time of joy and singing.
Kids had a chance to meet all of the band members, and look at and even tried out the instruments. When asked if they’d like to play an instrument one day, all the kids cheered YES!, but 2 holdouts weren’t too sure. Participants remarked, “This was fantastic. It was exciting, encouraging, and energizing, and a great way to share in community. It was a great snapshot of the Kingdom of God.”
