We will Remember
Fri, Nov 13, 2009
It was sobering to hear John Gillis, MC for the Winnipeg Remembrance Day Service, remind us to thank a veteran and do it soon because on average 77 veterans die everyday in Canada. John is a veteran himself, and he reminds me of a tough Sargeant Major, but on this day he rose to the role of MC for the group of over 5,000 people as he guided us through this solemn and sacred ceremony of remembrance. Our hearts were stirred once again as we met to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for Canadians with their own lives.
CFOT was on deck as guests of the Joint Veterans Association both in attendance and in the march by and salute to the Lieut-Governor of Manitoba Phillip Lee. Flagbearers for the Ambassadors of Holiness and Prayer Warriors sessions joined the platform party in presentation of colours as the honour guard for event with almost 50 military flag bearers. Thank you to Armand Lavallee, pictured below with cadets, our host for this extraordinary event. You can read Mr. Lavallee’s biography here.
Many veterans share stories of their memories of The Salvation Army during the war, and we owe a debt to these men and women who have been our greatest supporters over the last century. As the population of veterans decreases Canadians must commit to living up to the promises we make each November 11th…We will not forget!
