KRISTALLNACHT |UNDERSTANDING CONTEXT
Wed, Jul 22, 2009
As part of our Field Training at CFOT we spend the first semester in learning how to understand our context through engaging, observing and participating in the life of the community in Winnipeg. I came across this article on the website for the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, wherein they acknowledged the presence of cadets at their annual Kristallnacht Commemoration. Every November 9th the Jewish community gathers to retell the story, and to remember the events which led to the Hollocaust. Attendance at the event is a reminder that community extends beyond the walls of our own local congregations, and the importance of our role as we remember to speak for the voiceless. The event is an opportunity for us to listen to the story of the Jewish Community and experience in a very minor way their pain and the impact of the Hollocaust on them as a people and on our own context, the city of Winnipeg.
In speaking with organizers they share the importance of having a group like The Salvation Army come and listen to the stories of survivors. It strengthens their voice as the story is heard beyond the Jewish community. We were shocked when we were singled out in our attendance, and were blessed by the wonderful hospitality of the Hollocaust survivors and their family and friends who made us welcome in their midst.
