Descending towards the land so affectionately referred to as “the Rock” I glanced out the window of the plane and saw water give way to land and then land give way to snow! I couldn’t believe…Isn’t this supposed to be my summer appointment?
I quickly realized the snow was only in patches in the very highest and most protected areas of this beautiful country. Arriving in St. John’s I was struck by the fact that even the new buildings and homes that were being constructed held onto the character that is traditionally associated with Newfoundland. The people here were exceptionally eager to meet us just as we were eager to meet them.
Before we knew it we found ourselves at the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Congress in a hockey arena known as The Glacier. People found out that we were the cadets who were stationed at St. John’s West and they would make their way across the entire arena to come shake our hands and say hello. As I begin this appointment here in St. John’s I am looking forward to the opportunity to begin to get to know the people here and to share in a slice of their lives. I am eager to share in worship with them as we celebrate the blessings of God and share in the struggles of life. In the very short time that I have been here I have seen God move in several ways.
Within three days of being here I attended a retirement dinner and two funerals. It was clear God is moving through the actions of the individuals being recognized. One woman mentioned that had it not been for the individual who was retiring she would never have known God and would never have been able to experience the life she is. It is easy to see God moving in the lives of those who are eager to serve Him.
