In Lethbridge it is a rare occasion to see a homeless person. After spending the past year in Winnipeg, Lethbridge is truly the polar opposite. Today, however, Rachel and I were blessed with a brief encounter by a man I’ll call Luke. He was holding a sign that asked for food and bus money. We turned our car around and pulled up to him. He told us he was off to BC to see his grandchildren, and went on to tell us how God has been faithfully providing for him each day. Every morning he would wake up and ask God for help, and every evening he would thank God for getting through another day. We had a moment of prayer and then with a smile on his face he waved goodbye.
I am not sure how much we ministered to him, and maybe God used us to bless Luke. For sure God used Luke to bless me. We went to help him, but God used him to remind me of the Lords faithfulness to meet our needs every day. Rachel and I have been able to visit many members of the corps, and as much as we want to be a blessing and help in their lives over the summer they have been just as much or even more of a blessing to us. This Corps is rich with stories and tales of great trials of faith, some are in the middle of trails, some have overcome obstacles that leave you sitting there in awe and amazement. The message that is constantly being pressed on my heart is that God has been faithful and will always be faithful.
When I think about what Luke told me I have to ask myself, do I thank God every night for his faithfulness in my life, for his provision? It is a humbling thought, and reminds me that Christ is to be glorified in all that I do.
Thanking God for another day of faithfulness,
Cadet Matt Sheils
