WINTER ASSIGNMENT | CADETS RANDY & CATHY SHEARS
Mon, Jan 7, 2013
Cadets Randy & Cathy Shears (Disciples of the Cross session) were assigned to Thunder Bay, ON for their Winter Assignment. They share their experience with us.
During our winter assignment in Thunder Bay, Ontario we were able to experience ministry in a variety of ways. We worked at Corps Ministry at Thunder Bay Community Church and learned about the process of revitalizing a church. We also participated in social service oriented ministry at the Salvation Army Men’s Centre. This gave us a well- rounded and diversified experience. We assisted with the Sunday services and also helped with the Christmas Kettle campaign through the counting of donations each evening. At the Men’s Centre we were able to minister to the clients during morning chapel services, as well as on a one to one basis. We helped to prepare and present special events for the men during the Christmas celebrations, and assisted with the operation of the food bank, and distributed toys and gifts to needy families. We also helped to pack Christmas hampers at the city of Thunder Bay Christmas Cheer Centre. We enjoyed our visitation to the senior citizen retirement residence where we shared in a chapel service. Cathy also had the opportunity to teach someone how to better use the CMS program, enabling them to lighten their work load. Both of us feel that our experience was very positive and believe that it helped to confirm our calling to Salvation Army officership. Cathy also felt reaffirmed that God has called her to bring hope to people that need to know that someone truly cares for them.
