Tons of Books travel to India
Tue, Feb 24, 2009
The truck pulled into the CFOT parking lot, and dropped its load. One twenty foot container sat empty, waiting for it to be filled. Its intended cargo was books from two Salvation Army training colleges. And those same books were designated for a Salvation Army college yet to be built, in India.
Most Salvationists in the Canada and Bermuda Territory will be aware that its colleges in Toronto
and St John’s were closed and relocated to Winnipeg, including most books. When the Winnipeg campus opened in 2005 it became possible to make good use of similar resources at The John Fairbank Memorial Library. When the Winnipeg officer training college finally determined its surplus of books, an international need came to be known.
The Salvation Army in India has indicated its intent to construct an All-India Theological College, which will serve the purposes of officer training at an accredited level. In order to accomplish this, the need for an established library became evident. Contact was made on behalf of leadership in India through IHQ to the Canada and Bermuda Territory. And on that Monday in August over 20,000 volumes, packed in banana boxes, were hauled into the parked container. Two students from Weetamah’s summer program helped to load the cargo,
and once in place its driver took the books to the CPR loading docks. Days later the container arrived at a British Columbia port, then sailed for India.
Salvationists in the Canada and Bermuda Territory will be pleased to learn that these books and journals, which represent important investments in officer training here will now find an important home in India. May they continue to breathe life through their pages.
