With less than a week to go my time in the Ukraine is quickly coming to an end. What an amazing experience it has been though as I reflect on how God has used me as his agent in ministry. I have learned so much about God and his Kingdom. While playing football (soccer) with the abandoned children of the Dnepr Kid’s Shelter, I have learned just how valuable children are and how they are to be protected at all costs. While playing with a near blind baby who is slowly getting back her sight with funding from The Salvation Army, I’ve learned the inherent value in William Booth’s approach to the Gospel: “Care for the body, then for the soul.”
I’ve learned there are differences in every culture and that these differences are to be respected and affirmed. I’ve also learned however, that people are people and that as human beings the desire to experience love, acceptance, and a meaningful life is universal. And I have learned the value of friendship. It is amazing to think that in four short weeks I would have gained so many friends. To hear from their own lips how much Hannah and I have meant to them and how sad they’ll be when we’re gone is affirming to us and reflects the equal impact they have had on our lives.
Lastly, I’ve learned the importance of giving 100% support to the officers: those “on the ground” who will continue to fight long after we have left. In my approach to ministry I have sincerely tried to transfer any connections we have made to Sergey and Tanya as they will be the ones to nurture the new relationships we helped cultivate. Although there are many challenges here I am excited when I think of the Army’s potential in this country. To quote one young man in our fellowship, “Within ten years, The Salvation Army will spread across the entire country!” Hallelujah! May it be so.
