SUMMER ASSIGNMENT | CADETS ANNE & RANDY HOLDEN
Mon, Aug 13, 2012
The cadets of the Proclaimers of the Resurrection session have been stationed across Canada to participate in the communities and lives of Salvation Army Corps, throughout the summer. We have asked them to tell us about their experiences so far. Cadets Anne and Randy Holden landed in Campbell River – Ocean Crest, B.C.
As we sat on a small 18 seat plane flying from Vancouver to Campbell River, the beauty of God’s creation became very apparent. We have been blessed not only with the area’s landscape, but with the doors for ministry that God has graciously opened for us this summer. The ministries of Ocean Crest Community Church include Sunday morning and Wednesday evening services, Evergreen House and Shelter, a soup kitchen and two thrift stores. We were blessed to hear reports from adults and youth who just returned from a missions trip to Kenya and their reports of God’s work and faithfulness both to those who served and those they were serving. Two hours north of Campbell River is the community of Port Hardy, and we had the privilege of learning how the Salvation Army was partnering with numerous other community agencies there to provide services that meet a broad scope of needs to the residents.
We have been able to observe and assist in serving meals at the Light House soup kitchen, working in the thrift stores and participating in ministry management meetings. We both have preached God’s word on Sunday mornings and led Bible studies on Wednesday nights. It quickly became clear that there were wide opportunities to share God’s love in a variety of ways in Campbell River. We were blessed to assist with a service at the Salvation Army Corps in Courtney, and we have enjoyed fellowship time with our classmates Kim and Darryl Burry. We will soon be participating in a community inter-denominational open-air service that has a strong evangelical focus.
This summer has challenged and stretched us to grow deeper in our walk with the Lord and to continually rely on Him, knowing that He will provide us with the ability to whatever He calls us to do. We have had the opportunity to live out our calling, and to be confirmed that God is guiding us in His will. In these exciting days of growth and challenge, we proclaim the saving grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory!
