One thing I have recently heard is that a Minister’s job is both pastoral (caring for those within the church) and missional (reaching out to those outside our church doors). There needs to be a healthy balance between the two, not neglecting one or the other. Visitation is usually thought of as mainly pastoral, but “visitation” can also be with those that are not members of the church (next-door neighbours, employees that don’t attend the church, etc…). This type of visitation may not include sharing scripture but it does share Christ’s love and acceptance. I find it helps to break down walls and pre-conceived notions that Christians are strict, judging or weird. It is hanging out and showing we are normal people and we truly care about them.
I have enjoyed visiting those within the church but I especially get excited about spending time with those that are not yet connected with the church. I had a great day learning about the “second sort” at the Thrift store while getting to know the employees better. One women, who I spend most of my time with, was so kind to share half her snack with me and tell me about her life story. I can see God’s ‘prevenient grace’ at work in her life. God miraculously saved her from a major car accident that had her in the hospital for 2 years (1 year in ICU). God uses people to reflect His love for His creation! I hope that I can reflect God’s love to her and all His children.
For my first sermon I opened up and shared one of my struggles which also helped to introduce a Bible Study that was starting. God proved His strength in my vulnerability and weakness. We did not know how many books to order for this summer Bible Study but after the first session we had to double our order. It is neat to see God’s strength though my weakness. I pray I will always give God the glory and that someday He will be able to say “well done good and faithful servant.”
